Covid-19 scare: India’s zoos on high alert after tiger tests positive in US

The Central Zoo Authority (CZA) on Monday questioned all zoos across the region to be on substantial notify and accumulate samples fortnightly in suspected instances soon after a tiger at a US zoo examined beneficial for coronavirus.

In a letter to all states and Union territories, CZA Member Secretary S P Yadav mentioned the United States Section of Agriculture’s Nationwide Veterinary Companies Laboratories has verified Covid-19 in a tiger at the Bronx Zoo in New York.

“Zoos in the region are, therefore, encouraged to stay on best alertness, and keep an eye on animals 24X7 using CCTVs for any irregular behaviour or symptoms,” it mentioned.

The authority mentioned mammals, specifically cats, ferrets and primates, require to be diligently monitored and fortnightly samples of suspected instances be sent to selected animal overall health institutes for Covid-19 testing.
